Get to know JEE Main entrance exam

The Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main) comprises two papers. Paper 1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B.Tech.) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments. JEE (Main) is also an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs. Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning courses in the Country.

JEE Main, or commonly known as ‘Joint Entrance Exam’ is the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam that is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). This exam is a gateway for the admission to various B.Tech/B.E programmes offered by 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 23 CFTIs. Every year around 15 lakh applicants appear for this examination to get through the prestigious engineering colleges.

JEE Main is one of the famous and recognized levels of entrance exam for Class 12 candidates to get entry to seek admission in IIT as well. From 2019, JEE Main is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), multiple times a year in computer-based mode only. Also, JEE Main is the qualifying test for JEE Advanced through which candidates can get admission to 23 IITs.

Most states have now joined JEE Main and disbanded their own state level exams. Therefore JEE Main is the exam required for almost all engineering college admissions in India, both at state and national level.

From the year 2023, JEE Main is now the only qualifying exam for all NRI students seeking admissions under DASA quota, thus making this the most important entrance exam for NRIs based in Gulf countries.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

Remember that there are important and strict eligibility criteria fixed by the Board for the examination. 

Qualifying Examinations: Must have passed class 12 or equivalent exam.

Subjects to be Qualified in Qualifying Examination: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject, Language and any other subject.

Qualifying Marks for Admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs: Must score the minimum of 75% marks or should be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. For candidates belonging to SC/ST category minimum scores required is 65%.

JEE Main Paper-II for Architecture Colleges

Candidates seeking admission to Architecture course must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also 50% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination.

No Diploma holder is eligible for the entrance exam.

The recent changes in JEE Main allow for candidates to appear multiple times in a year for the entrance exam. The better of the scores will be used for the purpose of ranking as per the regulations laid by the authorities. Therefore it is in the best interests of the students to appear for all the attempts that are made available to them.

JEE Main Application Process

The JEE Main application form is released online by NTA. The application form for both the papers will be same. Candidates can fill application form either for Paper-I or Paper-II or for both.

Mode of Payment : You can do the payment via net banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, Bank Challan or Others.
