How to calculate 2024 percentile scores: The JEE Main 2024 Session 1 Result was released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on February 13, 2024. Hence, candidates are curious about how to calculate the JEE Main 2024 percentile scores that determine the ranking of students in the JEE Main 2024 exam.

The JEE Main 2024 result is prepared utilizing the normalization formula to determine the candidates' JEE Main percentile score. The NTA will create the JEE Main 2024 rank list using percentile scores rather than the candidates' actual exam scores. In this article, we will discuss calculating JEE Main 2024 percentile scores to give candidates a clear idea about the score calculation and ranking in JEE Main 2024.

Highlights of the JEE Main 2024 Percentile Score

  • The percentile marks are the JEE Main exam's normalized result, not the actual percentage marks achieved by the candidate.

  • The total percentile score is not equal to the sum of the percentile of each subject.

  • The percentile score of a candidate indicates the percentage of applicants who received JEE Main 2024 raw scores below or equal to the raw mark of that candidate.

  • It implies that the highest scorer in every JEE Main session will receive the same percentile score of 100.

  • The percentile marks for students between the highest and lowest scores will also be computed and converted into a 100-point scale.

  • The percentile score for each candidate below the highest mark will differ based on their raw scores.

  • JEE Main percentile scores are computed up to seven decimal places to determine accurate tanking. It also minimizes the tie-breaking situations where more than one candidate gets the same score.

  • The JEE Main 2024 merit list and ranks will be prepared using the percentile score.

Details Required to Calculate JEE Main 2024 Percentile Score

The JEE Main 2024 exam is conducted by NTA in two sessions and over a number of days in each session. The number of candidates appearing for the JEE Main exam varies on a daily basis as well as in different shifts. The exam difficulty level also changes shift-wise as well as on a daily basis.

Thus, NTA has implemented the percentile system based on the normalization procedure with the objective of bringing a common base in evaluating each candidate’s performance. To calculate the percentile score of a candidate, NTA uses the calculation procedure mentioned below.

The JEE Main exam results contain two components as follows:

  • Raw score

  • Overall percentile scores for each candidate

  • Subject-wise percentile score for a candidate

JEE Main 2024 Percentile Score Calculation Formula

Total Percentile Score (T1P)

Number of candidates who appeared for the session with a raw score equal to or less than T1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

Where T1= Total Raw score of the candidate

Physics Percentile Score (P1P)

Number of candidates who appeared for the session with a raw score equal to or less than P1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

Where P1= Raw score obtained by the candidate in Physics

Chemistry Percentile Score (C1P)

Number of candidates who appeared for the session with raw score equal to or less than C1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

Where C1= Raw score obtained by the candidate in Chemistry

 Mathematics Percentile Score (M1P)

Number of candidates who appeared for the session with raw score equal to or less than M1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

Where M1= Raw score obtained by the candidate in Mathematics

Important Terms Related to the Calculation of JEE Main 2024 Percentile Score

To better understand how to calculate JEE Main 2204 percentile scores, candidates need to know the meaning of different terms related to JEE Main 2024 percentile score calculation, which are explained below.

Important Terms Related to the Calculation of JEE Main 2024 Percentile Score

Terms

Meaning

Percentile score

The score determined by comparing the exam results of candidates who took the test is the percentile score. The percentile marks obtained by each student for that session are expressed on a 0-100 scale. The percentage score is different from the percentage marks obtained by the candidate.

Normalization

It refers to comparing test results of applicants who appeared for the JEE Main exam throughout various exam shifts. The normalization system of score calculation is a well-known practice and is used in different competitive exams at the national level, such as the CAT.

Percentile score and highest raw score

For each shift, the candidates achieving the highest raw scores will all get a normalized percentile score of 100, considering the number of candidates who appeared.

Percentile score and lowest raw score

Candidates with every lowest raw score for different shifts get a separate percentile score which is determined considering the total number of applicants who took the test for each shift.

Example of JEE Main Percentile Score Calculation

Here's an example of how the exam authorities determine the JEE Main percentile score.

For example: In 2021, applicants took the JEE Main exam in four sessions, which are indicated as follows:

First Session: Shift 1 of day 1
Second Session: Shift 2 of day 1
Third Session: Shift 1 of day 2
Fourth Session: Shift 2 of day 2

The number of candidates who appeared in each of the above sessions was as follows:

JEE Main 2024 Highest Raw Score and Percentile Score

The students securing marks equal to the highest marks for each session get a normalization score of 100, indicating that 100% of students obtained either equal or less than the highest scores.

For example, the highest scorer in Day 1 Shift 2 got 346 marks, whereas the total number of candidates who appeared for that session was 32541. Therefore, the percentile score of the highest scorer is calculated as follows:

Total Percentile Score:

Number of candidates who appeared for the session with raw score equal to or less than T1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

= 28012/28012*100 = 100

JEE Main 2024 Lowest Raw Score and Percentile Score

For example, the lowest raw score for Day 2 Shift 1 was -49 marks, whereas the total number of candidates who appeared for that session was 41326. Therefore, the percentile score for that candidate is calculated as follows:

Total Percentile Score:

= Number of candidates who appeared for the session with raw score equal to or less than T1/Total number of students who appeared for the session

= 1/41326*100

=0.0024198

JEE Main 2024 Tie-Breaking Procedures

The JEE Main, merit and rank lists are prepared using the total percentile ratings. If two or more candidates obtain exactly equal percentile scores on the JEE Main exam, the following rules will be applied by NTA to determine the ranking of applicants.

  • Candidates who scored higher in the mathematics percentile.

  • Candidates achieved higher scores in the Physics percentile.

  • Candidates scoring higher in the Chemistry percentile.

  • Candidates with higher age will be given preference.

JEE Main Merit List Preparation using Normalization Process

  • Step 1: It considers the schedule of the JEE Main exam. The JEE Main 2024 exam was conducted for four days with two shifts daily.

  • Step 2: The candidate’s raw scores and percentile scores for each subject will be used to create the results of JEE Main for each session.

  • Step 3: Compilation of the JEE Main results and preparation of the JEE Main merit list. Importantly, the ranking and merit list will be finalized only after resolving tie-breaking situations.

JEE Main 2024 Final Ranking and Merit List

The JEE Main 2024 final result will be evaluated by combining the individual scores for each subject (mathematics, chemistry, physics) and the overall score for JEE Main's first and second attempts. The better of the two JEE Main scores for a candidate who appears in both phases will be considered for creating the final merit list and ranking.

We hope this article gives you a comprehensive idea of calculating JEE Main 2024 percentile scores better to prepare you for the upcoming JEE Main exam and improve your scores and ranking.
